More Waterfalls? and Land's End

(jessica) Our trip seems to head for waterfalls. Big ones, short ones, wide ones, mossy ones...When choosing a hike, the ones with waterfalls at the end just seem to make if more worth the effort. They are all gorgeous and all very different. I'm dealing with my fear of heights, or of falling, as we careen along the edge of some cliffs, albeit that there are guard rails and such. The switchbacks are many and the dangers few, but I'm as paranoid as ever. The end is always spectacular and the kids always appreciative, though the hike starts with "another waterfall?" Today's was a myriad of green mosses hanging off of the rocks as the water trickeled down. In spring it is apparently massive, bringing whole trees up and over the falls.
Today, we also biked up and over rolling terrain alongside the ocean to the point of Land's End, so called "Gaspe" by the Mic-Mac Indians. Look on the map and you'll see we were at the very tip of Gaspe. Alena brought along her horse and rode behind me singing with joy. We spotted whale, seals and even a huge porcupine. As I did with the skunk visiting us as Lake Ontario, I called for the kids to "come see!" Is this smart? The skunk didn't spray us and the porcupine didn't send quills zooming after us, but is it smart?
Tonight my thoughts are with my family in NY who are mouring my Great Aunt Mary Ermilio Aliota, who passed away. Her funeral is tomorrow. I'm sad for Bob, Paul and John, who loved her like a mother, and for her sisters, who did also. Though she never had children, she took care of everyone around her, her nephews, her brothers and sisters, her husband. She was a fabulous cook and we'll all miss her terribly.
Tomorrow we are staying put to rest. After the bike ride in the rain, I told Alena to get in her seat because we're going 'home', meaning to Dan's place. "NO HOME!" she exclaimed. I've created a traveler!
